FMPD Hopes to Expand Neighborhood Watch Groups

The Fort Morgan Police Department is looking for residents interested in starting Neighborhood Watch programs in their areas of the city.

Neighborhood Watch is a voluntary program in which residents join together to make their homes less vulnerable to crime. In doing so, they also build cooperation and partnerships with law enforcement.

Police officers are unable to be everywhere at all times. Creating a Neighborhood Watch helps neighbors to become extra eyes and ears for law enforcement. Residents also get to know their neighbors and are better prepared to respond to suspicious or criminal activity.

Neighborhood Watch members participate in the program by observing and reporting suspicious activity. The residents of a neighborhood are the experts on what is normal and what is out of place. Reporting crime immediately sends the message that criminal activity is not tolerated in that neighborhood.

Getting involved is simple. Reach out to your neighbors and discuss concerns regarding issues in your area, and determine the level of interest others may have in starting a Watch group. While not every household is likely to be involved, incorporating as many of your neighbors as possible will increase the success in reducing crime.

Members of the Fort Morgan Police Department are happy to meet with Neighborhood Watch groups at a time and place convenient for the group members. Collaboration with the local police department allows officers to learn the concerns of the neighborhood and provide crime prevention tips and information.

Each watch group should identify a person to be your “Block Captain,” who can coordinate the group’s efforts and act as a liaison to the FMPD. Officers can help Neighborhood Watch members to review physical security measures, lighting and other features to create the safest environment possible.

If you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch program in the Fort Morgan area, call Officer Roger Doll at 970-542-3948.
