National Drug Take Back Event Saturday, April 29

The Fort Morgan Police Department is sponsoring a free Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop-off location in Fort Morgan will be at Colorado Plains Medical Center, in the northwest corner of the parking lot.

Residents are encouraged to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of expired or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.  Most homes have a supply of unwanted drugs that when left unchecked can be misused or abused by unauthorized individuals.  This event provides an opportunity to safely and responsibly dispose of unwanted medications.

Medications will be accepted with no questions asked.  Before dropping off drugs, citizens are asked to mark out any personal information on bottles or containers.  Law enforcement will be on hand to receive your medications and ensure proper handling of deposited medications.

Most any pills, prescriptions or vitamins will be accepted.  Liquids can also be dropped off if they are sealed in their original containers.  A few items that cannot be accepted include syringes, needles, mercury, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances or pressurized canisters.

Last year, Fort Morgan’s two drop-off events collected 347 pounds of unwanted drugs.  During this event the FMPD hopes to exceed that number.  Proper disposal prevents drugs from harming the environment and keeps controlled drugs out of the hands of unauthorized users.

This is a nationwide event and law enforcement agencies across the state are hosting drop-off sites. For more information contact Officer Roger Doll at 542-3948 or visit www.dea.gov to find additional locations.

In addition to the National Drug Take Back Event, the Fort Morgan Police continue to collect household medications at their lobby drop box through a state-sponsored program that allows residents to drop off medications at their convenience.

The drop box is available Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the lobby of the police department building at 901 E. Beaver Ave.

The local drop box for the Colorado Household Medication Take Back Program continues to be a success, with Fort Morgan Police recently collecting 31 pounds of discarded medications in 15 days.
