The Fort Morgan and Brush Police Departments learned last Friday, May 3, that they will share a grant of more than a half-million dollars to create a joint drug investigation unit serving the two departments.
The Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Board approved the FMPD’s request for four years of funding for a joint Drug Enforcement Unit with the Brush PD. The grant totals $516,000 over a four-year period starting as early as January 2020.
The FMPD will receive approximately 60 percent of the funds and approximately 40 percent will go to the Brush Police Department. The Drug Task Force will be housed at the Fort Morgan Police Department.
The grant calls for two investigators (one from each agency) and a part-time clerk.
FMPD Chief of Public Safety Paul Schultz said he expected to assign an experienced officer to the drug unit and replace that officer with a new recruit in 2020.
“A big thanks is due to Sgt. Steve Brown for writing the grant and to Michelle Miller for putting together the drug maps,” Schultz said.
