Temple, Underwood Honored with City Employee Awards

Two City of Fort Morgan workers were recognized with the city’s highest employee honors at the recent annual meetings of all city employees.

David Temple was named the Employee of the Year for 2020 and Matt Underwood was selected as the Manager of the Year. Temple is a technician at the city’s wastewater treatment facility, and Underwood is the Golf & Cemetery Superintendent.

The awards were announced at the all-employee meetings on Jan. 13 at the Cover Theatre.

The nomination for Temple stated that he is an extremely hard worker and determined to do the best possible on any task he is given. It praised his work ethic and said he was “a very nice person to know.”

“He is always busy doing the little things that make everyone’s job easier,” the nomination read. “He pays attention to every detail of our operation.”

That attention to detail helped Temple spot potential process problems at the plant, which if they had gone unnoticed could have caused tremendous operation problems, according to plant Superintendent Skip Kaiser.

Underwood had been the cemetery superintendent for several years before being assigned responsibility for the golf course as well – two facilities with sprawling acres of grass turf to maintain.

Underwood proved more than up to the challenge. His nomination said he had “stepped up to the plate and took over twice the workload” and had done an outstanding job in his new position.

“In this past year he has led by example, showed excellent positivity and customer service inside and outside,” the nomination read. “Matt was able to rise above some initial resistance from several golfers and has since earned their trust and proved that with his leadership day in and day out the golf course will continue to improve.”

True to his character, Underwood has repeatedly given all credit for his award to his crews at the golf course and cemetery.

Both employees received certificates memorializing their recognition as well as gifts and a lunch with City Manager Steve Glammeyer.
