Non-Paying Utility Customers Once Again Face Shutoffs

Executive orders issued by Gov. Jared Polis in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited the shutoff of utilities for failure to pay bills. These orders were intended to provide relief to the many Coloradans who lost jobs and incomes due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

These orders were never intended to relieve customers of responsibility for paying their bills, only to provide a temporary respite during the difficult financial hardships many faced. In most cases customers were asked to set up payment plans with their utility companies and pay what they could to avoid piling up massive back bills.

The state executive orders have now expired and the city will begin notifying customers who are in arears on their utility accounts that they will be shut off unless payment is made or a payment plan is arranged through the Utility Billing Department. The resumption of the shutoff policy is effective with the utility bills just recently mailed to customers at the beginning of April.

The Morgan County Family Center reportedly has COVID Relief funding available to assist customers in paying their bills.
