[ARCHIVED] Police Looking for Person Responsible for Starting Fire

Weekly Crime Information Alert
By Community Resource Officer Roger Doll

Fort Morgan Police are investigating an unusual fire that occurred in the early morning of November 25, and are trying to determine exactly what the arsonist’s target was.

Police were called to a suspicious fire in the alley of the 900 block of Ensign Street to find a wooden fence engulfed in flames. Responding officers noticed a small red hose which lead from the fence to the gas tank of a nearby vehicle. Officers discovered that the approximately 40 feet of hose had been used to siphon gasoline from the vehicle’s gas tank and start the fire.

Upon closer inspection, investigators discovered the hose was an air compressor hose that had been inserted approximately four feet into the gas tank. Police don’t know if the fire was intended to damage the fence, or if the intended target was the vehicle and the arsonists attempted to use the hose as a type of fuse to try and ignite the vehicle.

Several items were collected from the crime scene and will be sent to a lab for examination. Investigators hope the additional analysis provides further clues as to who is responsible for lighting the fire.

Anyone with information on this or other crimes is asked to call the Fort Morgan Police Department at (970) 867-5678. If a person with information wishes to remain anonymous they can call Crime Stoppers at (970) 542-3411 and may be eligible for a cash reward or submit your tip online.
