A common cause of backups is sewer lines blocked by grease and/or paper towels, diapers, feminine hygiene products, condoms and cleaning wipes.

Grease gets into the system from household drains and poorly maintained grease traps in commercial establishments. Grease is often washed into the sewer system through the kitchen sink. Grease sticks to the inside of sewer pipes. Over time, the grease can build up and block the entire pipe.

1. Never pour grease down sinks or into toilets. 2. Scrape grease and food scraps into a can or trash for disposal. 3. Do not put grease down garbage disposals. 4. Only put toilet paper in the sewer; other products should be disposed of in the trash.

Paper towels do not disintegrate in water like toilet paper is designed to do. Paper towels remain in the sewer system and build up, causing clogs. Items like paper towels, diapers, feminine hygiene products, condoms and cleaning wipes should not be flushed down the toilet; they should be disposed of by throwing them in the trash.

This process includes using high-pressure water from a jet truck to clean the pipelines and then sending a camera through the lines to check the effectiveness of cleaning and the system structure. In some areas, root cutting may be required, which could take slightly more time and may require jetting the line several times to ensure the best possible cleaning.
